Driving Decarbonisation through Industry Collaboration

About Us

India’s steel industry stands at a pivotal moment, accounting for 12% of the country’s total greenhouse gas emissions. The sector emits an average of 2.54 tonnes of CO₂ per tonne of steel produced, significantly higher than the global average of 1.91 tonnes. This elevated emission intensity is largely due to the continued reliance on coal-based production methods.

As India works towards its Net Zero target by 2070 pledged at COP 26, decarbonising the steel sector is essential. In response to this challenge, WWF-India and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) have launched the India Green Steel Coalition (IGSC) to accelerate the transition to low-carbon steel.

KEY INTERVENTIONS

To achieve a 30% reduction in carbon emission intensity by 2030 (relative to 2023 levels), IGSC is advancing coordinated, high-impact interventions across policy, finance, industry engagement, and knowledge sharing. These efforts form the foundation of India’s transition to a low-carbon steel sector.

STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT & KNOWLEDGE DISSEMINATION

  • Publish insightful whitepapers based on in-depth industry research.
  • Organize Capacity building workshops
  • Strengthen media presence and outreach to raise awareness

ACTION GROUPS

  • Focus groups with industry experts, think tanks, research institutes
  • Target immediate & long term measures for decarbonisation (RE integration, CCU etc.)
  • Create impact reports for implementing green transition

POLICY ENGAGEMENT

  • Engage with concerned Ministry to share potential policy considerations based on the data-driven insights generated in whitepapers/ impact reports & stakeholder consultations

FINANCIAL ENGAGEMENT

  • Engage with the Government of India for incentivizing mechanisms
  • Engage with banks/financial institutions for capacity-building around green steel ecosystem

EVENTS

IGSC hosts capacity-building events and workshops to disseminate knowledge outputs and insights from industry experts, supporting stakeholders in their transition towards green steel pathways and a sustainable green steel ecosystem.

India Green Steel Coalition (IGSC) marked an important milestone at the Green Steel & Mining Summit 2025 with the launch of the IGSC website and its third white paper, “Unlocking Green Steel Demand”. The launch was officiated by Shri Lakhan Lal Dewangan, Minister of Commerce and Industry, Government of Chhattisgarh, marking an important step towards advancing the green steel agenda in India.

The India Green Steel Coalition (IGSC) organised a high-impact webinar on “Policy Discussion on Green Steel”. The event provided practical insights into policy roadmaps, regulatory incentives, and strategic collaborations essential for scaling green steel adoption in India. Over 70 participants attended, underscoring the sector’s strong interest in policy-driven climate action and green hydrogen integration.

IGSC organized a regional capacity building workshop in Kolkata focused on promoting low carbon technologies in the steel sector. The event brought together over 70 stakeholders and featured expert-led sessions on green hydrogen DRI systems, CCUS, renewable energy integration, and waste heat recovery.

Speakers included representatives from Tata Steel, NISST, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Bombay, Tenova, Thermax, and Tata Power. The workshop highlighted the importance of collaboration, innovation, and certification frameworks in advancing decarbonization across the sector.
