India’s steel industry stands at a pivotal moment, accounting for 12% of the country’s total greenhouse gas emissions. The sector emits an average of 2.54 tonnes of CO₂ per tonne of steel produced, significantly higher than the global average of 1.91 tonnes. This elevated emission intensity is largely due to the continued reliance on coal-based production methods.
As India works towards its Net Zero target by 2070 pledged at COP 26, decarbonising the steel sector is essential. In response to this challenge, WWF-India and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) have launched the India Green Steel Coalition (IGSC) to accelerate the transition to low-carbon steel.
Read MoreTo achieve a 30% reduction in carbon emission intensity by 2030 (relative to 2023 levels), IGSC is advancing coordinated, high-impact interventions across policy, finance, industry engagement, and knowledge sharing. These efforts form the foundation of India’s transition to a low-carbon steel sector.
IGSC hosts capacity-building events and workshops to disseminate knowledge outputs and insights from industry experts, supporting stakeholders in their transition towards green steel pathways and a sustainable green steel ecosystem.
